Occupational Therapy is the first step in finding ways to perform tasks we once considered trivial again. Who it helps

How do I know if I need Occupational Therapy (OT)?

OT is beneficial for many types of patients, especially those suffering from a neurological impairment, such as spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, etc. Studies have shown that individuals who are receiving intensive OT early on or even years post a Central Nervous System insult have improved fine motor skills, and have increased independence with all tasks of daily living overall.

Your role

What is my responsibility as an OT patient?

As a patient it is your responsibility to be an advocate for yourself and your functional goals. It is pivotal that you establish an open and honest relationship with your occupational therapist from the very beginning, so he or she can help maximize your ability to reach the goals that you both mutually agree on. As a patient, it is very important that you diligently follow your home exercise program and make activity a part of your daily life.

Research heavily supports multiple repetitions of task specific activities for recovery. Educating yourself on your diagnosis and how it affects your body will be an important key to success. Your occupational therapist will be there to facilitate and guide you towards your goals, and be a strong advocate for you throughout the entire process.
